a) BIOGRAPHY: Raised in Pittsburgh's Homewood section, at 314 North HomewoodAvenue, he graduated from Sterrit School, Point Breeze. His fatherdiedof pneumonia in 1909, just before he enrolled at Shady Side Academy. Hewent on to Princeton University and graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1917 witha degree in classics, planning to study law. He joined the U.S. Army andserved with the Coastal Artillery Corps at Fortress Monroe,Virginiabefore being sent to France with large railway guns. He was aFirstLieutenant with the 5th Tng. Co., enlisted 25 August 1917, and discharged25 January 1919. After the war he returned to Pittsburgh to help hismother manage the William T. Leggett Company.n nBIOGRAPHY: On 12 September 1925, in Washington, D.C.�s MetropolitanMethodist Episcopal Church, he married Lucile McKee Showalter, Methodistdaughter of former Congressman Joseph Baltzell Showalter and Ella MarianMcKee. The ceremony was witnessed only by the respective families,with aluncheon following at the Mayflower Hotel. The newlyweds took the trainto New York, where they stayed for a few days in the RooseveltHotel, nodoubt paying calls on Leggett relatives, both those who had,and thosewho had not, been able to attend the wedding in Washington. They hadtickets for the S. S. Sixaola, of the United Fruit Company SteamshipService, sailing for Kingston, Jamaica at 11 a.m. on 16 September, fromPier 9 North River. While in Jamaica, they stayed in the MyrtleBankHotel in Kingston, also owned and operated by the United Fruit Company.We have a photo album and scrapbook, embossed "Our Book ofMemories--Milton and Lucile Leggett" which contains many pictures andother remembrances of their courtship, honeymoon and married livesthrough about 1960.n nBIOGRAPHY: Returning from their honeymoon, they lived for a short time at605A Worth Street, Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh. Milton is seen posingbefore the front door in his army uniform on Memorial Day, 1926. Theywere living there upon the birth of their first child, Elizabeth Ann, on16 February 1927. Shortly thereafter, in May, 1927, they moved to largerquarters at 6521 Dalzell Place. Their second child, John Milton, arrivedon 22 January 1931. In 1932, they moved to the northern edge of AlleghenyCounty, to Bradford Woods Boro. During the family's nine-yearresidencythere, he served on the Boro Council, and the children attendedelementary school in a two-room school house. They rented a house at 800Narcissus Street, Clearwater Beach, Florida, during the summer of1941.Lucile's mother and her only surviving brother, Joseph, had moved fromWashington, D.C. and were by that time residents of Tampa. Lucile wasstill in Clearwater Beach in September 1941, when Milton sent a telegramfrom Pittsburgh commemorating their 16th anniversary and announcing thesigning of the purchase agreement for their first house. So they returnedto Squirrel Hill, at 6632 Ridgeville Street, primarily so Liz couldattend Winchester-Thurston School. They lived in Ridgeville Street until1960, when they moved to a new house of their own design at 121 HartwoodDrive, Point Breeze.n nBIOGRAPHY: During all these years, they attended Calvary EpiscopalChurch, Pittsburgh. At Calvary Church he had been a choir boy, and as ayoung man was an organizer of the Junior Vestry which did Sunday morningushering. Later he served as a vestryman of this venerable parish,working for many years as an Every Member Canvasser.n nBIOGRAPHY: As President of the William T. Leggett Co., Inc., Miltonoversaw the expansion of the firm and the rapid postwar changes in thewholesale building supply business. He replaced heavy tonnage, low profitinventory such as sewer pipe, cement and slate roofing with aluminumwindows and siding and all kinds of kitchen and bathroom fixtures andappliances. He moved the firm from the Strip District to the Bloomfieldproperty on the PRR mainline at 615 Gross Street, and, in the late1960's, to the present location next to the 40th Street Bridge inLawrenceville. His plan to sell the business to his employees was carriedout by his sister Helen Corbett and his son John.n nBIOGRAPHY: A man with true Renaissance interests, Milton read widely,loved to hike and tour the back roads and historic sites of the U.S.A.and Canada. He had an amazing ability to relate easily to persons of allbackgrounds; he took a genuine and compassionate interest in all whom hemet. He enjoyed painting and photography, and he delighted Pittsburghaudiences with his antique "magic lantern" shows. A favorite spot in thebackyard garden was his wildflower bed.n nBIOGRAPHY: Milton died of cancer at Columbia Hospital in July 1970. Notlong after, Lucile gave up the house she had overseen the design andconstruction of only a decade earlier.
